Background of the Study
School feeding programs have emerged as a vital public health intervention aimed at improving child nutrition and educational outcomes, particularly in areas where food insecurity is prevalent. In Lagos State, where urban poverty and nutritional deficiencies coexist, school feeding initiatives have been introduced to provide children with regular, balanced meals during school hours. These programs not only enhance nutritional intake but also serve as incentives for increased school attendance and improved academic performance (Adeyemi, 2023). By offering meals that are rich in essential nutrients, school feeding programs help combat malnutrition, which is known to adversely affect cognitive development and overall health.
The urban context of Lagos State presents unique challenges and opportunities for school feeding interventions. While the state benefits from relatively better infrastructure and resources compared to rural regions, pockets of urban poverty persist, leaving many children at risk of inadequate nutrition. The effectiveness of these programs is closely tied to the quality of food provided, the consistency of meal distribution, and the overall management of the feeding schemes (Olatunde, 2024). Moreover, the role of school feeding in fostering social equity cannot be underestimated, as it directly addresses disparities in access to nutritious food among children from different socio-economic backgrounds.
Recent studies have underscored the importance of integrating school feeding programs with broader nutritional education and health services. This integrated approach is critical for ensuring that children not only receive adequate nutrition during school hours but also benefit from improved dietary practices at home. Given the growing concerns about childhood malnutrition in urban areas, there is a pressing need to evaluate the impact of school feeding programs on child nutrition outcomes in Lagos State. This study will analyze the nutritional benefits of these programs, assess their effectiveness in reducing malnutrition, and identify factors that can enhance their overall impact (Balogun, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the implementation of school feeding programs in Lagos State, significant challenges persist in ensuring optimal nutritional outcomes for children. There is limited empirical evidence that comprehensively evaluates the direct impact of these programs on reducing malnutrition. While some studies suggest improvements in nutritional status and academic performance, other research indicates variability in outcomes due to inconsistencies in meal quality, frequency, and program management (Ibrahim, 2023).
Inadequate funding, logistical challenges, and disparities in program implementation across different schools further complicate the issue. In some instances, the lack of proper monitoring and evaluation mechanisms has led to inefficient resource utilization and limited nutritional benefits. Moreover, the influence of external factors—such as household food security and parental nutritional knowledge—has not been fully integrated into the evaluation of these programs, leading to an incomplete understanding of their overall impact. This gap in research hinders the development of more effective school feeding strategies that could address both immediate nutritional deficits and long-term health outcomes for children in Lagos State (Nwosu, 2024).
This study aims to bridge this gap by conducting a comprehensive evaluation of school feeding programs and their impact on child nutrition. It will assess the nutritional quality of meals, the consistency of program delivery, and the overall effect on children’s health and academic performance. The findings will provide evidence-based recommendations to enhance program effectiveness and ensure that school feeding initiatives contribute significantly to the improvement of child nutrition in urban settings.

Research Questions
Research Hypotheses
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on primary schools in Lagos State implementing feeding programs. Data will be collected through nutritional assessments, interviews with school administrators, and surveys with parents and children. Limitations include variability in program implementation and external influences such as household dietary practices.
